Sweep

Women's Competitive Sweep

Women’s Competitive Sweep (April 2 – November 3)

This team is for very committed rowers with at least 3 years of experience and a desire to race at local and national regattas. The program is designed to improve fitness, technique, and competitive potential. Training for both sprint and head regattas will be a priority, and participants must be committed to racing. Participation in this program and seating will be at the coach’s discretion and based upon on-the-water performance, periodic testing, physical ability, effort, and attendance.

This program meets each weekday morning Monday through Friday.

Fees cover coached program and ACR dues/fees only. Race fees of up to $400 per year should be anticipated for those planning to race. These fees cover boat entry charges and trailer fees.

Men's Competitive Sweep

Men’s Competitive Sweep (April 2 – November 3)

This program is for competitive rowers. The group will participate in selected sprint races in the spring and summer and head races in the fall. Lineups will be determined by on-the-water performance, erg scores, and dedication. Rowers will have a combination of on-the-water training and indoor workouts and participate in the program at the coach’s discretion.

This program meets each weekday morning Monday through Friday.

Race fees will be separate. Details will be provided once the racing schedule is established.

Club Sweep

Club Sweep (April 2 – November 3)

This program is for men and women who are primarily interested in getting exercise and technical experience on the water. Rowers in this group should expect workouts to be designed to improve fitness and technique and involve both water and land workouts. This program is suitable for those emerging from the Novice Sweep/Sweep I programs, as well as those with at least 1-2 years of rowing experience. Seating for practices is at the coach’s discretion and based upon the rower’s ability and availability. Every rower must have completed at least a novice sweep class.

This program meets three days per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

This program is limited to 20 rowers.

Coxswains

Coxswains (April 2 – November 3)

This membership category is for dedicated coxswains who participate in specific ACR sweep programs. Coxswains should be available a minimum of three days a week. Please contact coaches at specific sweep programs to find out more or email ACR Safety Representative to learn of planned coxswain training ahead of the 2018 season.

Novice Sweep

Novice Sweep (June 4 – July 13)

This program is for adults who have no rowing experience. Its goal is to teach basic rowing skills and technique and to experience the excitement and fun of the sport. After completion of this course, rowers are eligible to join ACR’s Sweep I program. Participants will meet for ten sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, 7:30am – 9:00am.

There will be two sessions:
Session 1: June 4 – June 22
Session 2: June 25 – July 13 (no meeting July 4)

This program is limited to 18 rowers for each session.

Sweep I

Sweep I (July 17 – September 15)

This is a continuation of ACR’s Novice Sweep program. Rowers will be encouraged to build on their newly learned technique. The program is also open to more experienced rowers who wish to row in the evenings.
Rowers will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, and Sunday mornings, 7:30am – 9:00am.

This program is limited to 18 rowers.

Sweep II (June 4 – September 27)

This program is a continuation of ACR’s Novice Sweep and Sweep I programs and is intended for rowers with at least these programs or 1 year of club sweep rowing experience. Rowers will be encouraged to build on their newly learned technique. The program is also open to more experienced rowers who wish to row in the evenings.

Rowers will meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 pm.

This program is limited to 18 rowers.

Sculling

Competitive Sculling

Competitive Sculling (April 3 – November 4)

This program is for experienced and dedicated adult scullers who want to be coached and trained for competition. At least three years of sculling experience is required, however, exceptions may be granted. Rowers will compete in both open and masters events. All participants are required to pass a flip test.

This program meets each weekday morning Monday through Friday.

This program is limited to 16 rowers.

Race fees will be separate. Details will be provided once the racing schedule is established.

Masters Sculling
Masters Sculling (April 2 – November 3)

This program is for masters-level scullers who want to improve their rowing technique and physical fitness. Previous experience in Masters Sculling or at least 2 years of sculling experience is required. The coach will seat rowers in varied positions in quads, doubles, and singles based on the individual’s skill, conditioning, and technique so they may experience the responsibilities of each seat. Rowers going out in a single do not to have to have completed a flip test since the coach will accompany rowers.

This program meets three mornings a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

This program is limited to 20 rowers.

Club Sculling
Club Sculling (April 2 – November 3)

This program is for scullers who want to improve their rowing technique and physical fitness. Scullers who have completed the Sculling I program are appropriate for this program.

This program meets three days per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Coaches will have discretion to seat rowers in varied positions in quads, doubles, and singles based on skill, conditioning, and technique. Rowers may be assessed and recommended to the Masters Sculling program based on technique and fitness to ensure program balance and safe supervision.

Singles Sculling Group

Singles Sculling Group (April 2 – November 3)

This program is for a small group of adult rowers who want to improve their technique of single sculling in addition to improving their physical fitness. Participants will row together under the direction of a coach rowing in a single scull, and she assumes all will be relatively competent in their own single. The goal of this program is to improve a rower’s technique and performance with a view to racing, regardless of previous racing experience.

Rowers in this program meet Monday through Friday throughout the season and should own or have access to privately-owned sculls, however, ACR singles may also be available. If a rower uses an ACR boat, a flip test will be required.
Program hours are usually from 6-7:15am, however, lack of light sometimes forces a later launch time. But, if a safety launch accompanies the group, an earlier start time is possible.

Uncoached Sculling

Uncoached Sculling (April 2 – November 3)

This program is intended for owners of private singles who rent rack space at the boathouse. Access to the small fleet of club boats is on a space available basis and coached programs have priority usage. ACR currently has a very limited number of club owned single sculls to be shared among its programs. To use an ACR single without a coach’s launch on hand, a rower must (1) be a member of another ACR team or program, (2) pass a flip test, and (3) be authorized by an ACR coach or dockmaster after demonstrating competence in navigation and boat handling.

ACR has a limited number of racks for rent to members who have privately owned single sculls. You must be a member to rent a rack. Racks are for single sculls only, and owners must have insurance coverage for their boats. Rack space for other types of watercraft is not available. Uncoached rowers must sign out in a rowing log before and after they row for safety checks. (See ACR Handbook for specific requirements.)

Rack Rentals

Rack Rentals

ACR has a limited number of racks for rent to members who have privately owned single sculls. You must be a member to rent a rack. To be a member, please sign up for one of ACR’s numerous programs. If you are not interested in participating in any of these other programs, please sign up for Uncoached Sculling to become a member prior to paying for your rack rentals. Racks are for single sculls only and owners must have insurance coverage for their boats. Rack space for other types of watercraft is not available.

Novice Sculling

Novice Sculling (June 4 – July 13)

This program is for adults who have no rowing experience and want to learn to scull. The goal of this program is to teach rowing safety and etiquette, achieve basic sculling skills and technique in a mixed quad, and to understand the excitement and fun of the sport. On completion of the course, rowers are eligible to join ACR’s Sculling I coached program. Participants will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm – 8:00pm and on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7:30am – 9:00am.

There will be two sessions:
Session 1: June 4 – June 22
Session 2: June 25 – July 13 (no meeting July 4)

This program is limited to 16 rowers per session.

Sculling I

Sculling I (July 24 – September 15)

This program is for adults who have completed the ACR Novice Sculling course or a similar program and want to further develop their sculling skills and technique as well as improving their physical fitness. The goal of this program is to become an intermediate sculler who can row for a long period without a missed stroke. Focus will be on improving the balance in the boat, executing proper catch and release, and synchronizing with other rowers. The coach will seat rowers in the boats (primarily quads) in varied positions so rowers can experience the responsibilities of each seat.

Rowers will meet for twenty-four sessions between July 24 and September 15 on Sundays (7:30 am – 9:00 am) and Tuesdays and Thursdays (6:30 pm – 8:00 pm).

This program is limited to 20 rowers.

Sweep to Scull

Sweep to Scull (July 16 – July 23)

This short, intense program is for experienced sweep rowers who would like to gain exposure to sculling. After participating in the program it is anticipated that a rower could then join the ACR Sculling 1 program and thus further broaden his or her understanding of the discipline.

The program will take place on four evenings, July 16th, 18th, 20th, and 23rd from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

This program is limited to 12 rowers.
